The Volkswagen Beetle, originally known as the Type 1 or "The People’s Car," first rolled off the production line in 1945. With over 21.5 million first-generation models sold, the Beetle remains one of the most popular cars in automotive history.
Celebrated for its innovative air-cooled engine, the Beetle was compact, practical, and affordable to buy and maintain. Its engine design required less maintenance and was easier to repair than many American cars of the era. In the U.S., the Beetle became a symbol of freedom, individuality, and counterculture movements. Volkswagen produced the Beetle until 2019, marking a remarkable 70-year legacy.
